Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls Twice to Wilmington

Garden City, N.Y. - In a rematch of the previous three NCAA East Super Regionals, the Adelphi University softball team lost both legs of its doubleheader against Wilmington University (Del.) on Thursday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field, by the final scores of 6-1 and 7-2.

Game 1: Adelphi 1, Wilmington 6
The matinee featured a fast start by the visitors, as a pair of round trippers put the Panthers in an early deficit.

After Bella Barnes went deep in the second, Haley Grygo swatted a grand slam in the following frame to cap off a five spot by the Wildcats, quieting the supporters in the stands.

The Brown and Gold's offense showed signs of life in the home half, as Courtney Murphy set the table with a lead off single. She later swiped second base and got into scoring position for Brianna Pearson, who got the Panthers on the board by roping her second double of the day.

Both squads would stay put the rest of the way, as Wilmington's Kylee Gunkel and Adelphi's Lily Kenney got into a pitchers duel, keeping the game settled.

The Cats' offense was kept at bay for the remainder of the game, scratching just one run across against Gunkel in the matchup. The only base knock after the third inning rally was Ellen Tarjan as she beat the right fielder for a two-bagger but later got stranded.

Kenney came on in relief of starter Jenna Plue in the third frame, and dazzled, finishing the game allowing just two hits in the four and two-thirds innings of work, softening the Wilmington bats in the process.

Game 2: Adelphi 2, Wilmington 7
The nightcap was a much slower burn, with both sides seeing zeroes on the scoreboard through the first four.

Kellogg excited the Panther faithful early, taking three bases on a shot to the gap in right center field as the second batter to the plate. Makayla Comer further mounted the pressure getting to first on balls, but later got called out from leaving the bag too early.

Further action in the second and third innings were relatively quiet, other than a dazzling catch by Angeline Montañez to send the crowd into a frenzy.

The Wildcat offense began to wake up for the fifth, as three RBI singles capped off a five-run inning to put the visitors in a high leverage spot.

Adelphi loaded the bases in the home half after two singles from Murphy and Kellogg, but an untimely flyout hushed the raving fans.

Slugging came back into the fold for the sixth frame, with Ellen Tarjan's triple bringing home Pearson after her leadoff double. Pinch hitter Courtney Wengryn came up with a clutch infield single to increase the run total to two before inning's end.

Despite the gaining momentum that the 'Cats were generating, two insurance runs in the seventh for Wilmington put the game even further out of reach.

Head Coach Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, April 5 when they take on American International College. Game time from Ficke Field is scheduled for 12 noon.
