Manchester, N.H. — After a split with Saint Anselm on Friday, the Adelphi baseball team returned to the field on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire.
Game 1: Adelphi 1, Southern New Hampshire 6
Dawson Montesa was on the bump for the Cats and after the Penmen got to him early with a two run home run in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead, he settled down and recorded a quality start. The sophomore finished the day with 7.0 IP three earned runs and five strikeouts.
Unfortunately for the Brown and Gold, the offense never got going as SNHU starter Jake Lapham only allowed one run in six innings of work.
That run came after Alex Rende drove in James Eden on an RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Southern New Hampshire got to the Adelphi bullpen, scoring three runs after Montesa exited and went on the win game one, 6-1.
Game 2: Adelphi 1, Southern New Hampshire 9
Early on, Greyson Pizzonia walked and stole second twice but the Cats could not drive him in.
The Penmen took advantage of their strong pitching in the bottom of the third when a pair of singles, a double and a sacrifice fly resulted in a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth Johnny Catusoco walked and got to second after a wild pitch but once again the SNHU starter shut down any type of rally.
The fourth and fifth resulted in offense for the home team as the Penmen struck for six runs to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
Bryan McCleary scored the lone Panther run after a sacrifice fly as Adelphi fell 9-1.
Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Cats have competed Northeast-10 conference play, awaiting their fate for the conference playoffs. They will return to the field on Tuesday at 3:00 PM at Mercy.
