Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a pair of home runs from
Brianna Pearson and
Julianna Sanzone, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Saint Anselm College on Thursday afternoon, by the final scores of 6-0 and 4-3.
Game 1: Adelphi 6, Saint Anselm 0
The day started with pregame ceremonies in collaboration with the Bridges to Adelphi program, as students threw out the ceremonial first pitch and announced the Panther starting lineups.
Errors filled the first inning, as
Zee Zee Shreter reached base immediately after a bobble at second base. A flyout from
Courtney Wengryn then seemed ordinary, but a subsequent throwing error in right field brought Shreter all the way home to break the ice.
Despite both teams putting runners in scoring position, the game remained quiet until the home half of the fourth. There,
Courtney Murphy and Shreter tacked on two more runs via a groundout and single.
Wengryn then laced one into the gap later in the frame for her ninth double of the season, scoring two more and increasing the margin to five by the end of four.
Starting pitcher
Lily Kenney kept the Hawks at bay for the entirety of the game, allowing only four hits. Two strikeouts in the seventh upped her total to eight, earning her tenth win in 2025 to end the early action.
Game 2: Adelphi 3, Saint Anselm 4
The nightcap also saw a slow burn, with the first two going scoreless on both sides.
A walk coupled with an error-ridden fielder's choice put runners on second and third with one out in the home half of the second. However, two consecutive flyouts sent us to the third.
In the next half inning, two bases-loaded walks from starter
Jenna Plue scored the first pair of runs on behalf of the Hawks.
Tori Parente entered in relief during the third frame, and got the rambunctious crowd at Ficke Field firing after retiring three consecutive batters to escape the jam.
Following up in the fourth, two doubles from Saint A's piled on another score, increasing the deficit to three for the Cats.
Pearson lit up the Panther faithful once more when she towered a 1-1 pitch past the left field fence, putting Adelphi on the board for the first time in Game 2.
Another insurance run came across for the Hawks later in the sixth to give themselves some breathing room. The duo of Wengryn and Sanzone soon struck again in the home half, as a leadoff triple from the former set up the latter for a deep two-run blast as the bleachers rattled once more.
Now down by one, a walk from
Reeghan McCarthy took a base on balls to make things more interesting in the seventh. A hard-hit ball from Sanzone with two outs looked promising, but it was handled at first base to end the day.
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will close out their regular season schedule tomorrow against Southern New Hampshire University. Serving as the team's Senior Day, first pitch from Ficke Field is scheduled for 2 p.m., with a pregame ceremony beginning at 1:40.
