Garden City N.Y. - As an intended sacrifice bunt resulted in a walk-off courtesy of Angelina Kellogg, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University on Friday afternoon by the final scores of 5-4 and 7-2 on Senior Day.
Game 1: Adelphi 5, Southern New Hampshire 4
Emotions were running high, as a pregame ceremony honored seven members of the graduating class.
The Penmen cracked the box score open first, after Mikaya Alto tripled. Alyssa Abbott then hit a ground ball to the left side to bring her home, giving the visitors an early edge.
In the bottom half, right fielder Julianna Sanzone brought the Ficke Field crowd to life, pulling into second with a ground-rule double for the Cats. Following Brianna Pearson's sacrifice bunt, freshman catcher Maddy Moore knotted things up with a single through the right side.
The bats stayed active in the next frame, with consecutive singles from Courtney Murphy, Zee Zee Shreter, and Angelina Kellogg. By the end of it all, Adelphi found themselves on top by a run.
Starting pitcher Lily Kenney settled the Penmen offense down, retiring nine in a row heading into the bottom of the fourth. In the home half, Moore banged a double off the right field wall in the fourth, with Murphy soon after ripping a single into left field to give the Brown and Gold a two run lead.
SNHU's offense awakened in the top of the sixth, stringing together four singles highlighted by RBI knocks from Charlotte Donovan and Abby Lineman to swing the advantage back to the visitors.
In the bottom of the seventh, Murphy led off with a single into left field, pumping energy into the fans at Ficke Field.
Shreter then drew a walk to put the winning run on base, as Angelina Kellogg provided small-ball heroics. Placing a near-perfect bunt single down the third base line, the throw from the Penmen third baseman was dropped.
Hitting Kellogg and trickling into foul territory in the process, Murphy scored from second while Shreter put her head down and scored all the way from first to win the game 5-4. Kenney earned her 11th win of the season en route to the victory, allowing three earned runs off seven hits.
Game 2: Adelphi 2 , Southern New Hampshire 7
The nightcap saw a slower pace to start, as both teams were held scoreless until the third.
Southern New Hampshire's Grace Jenkins stole second following a single to right field to get into scoring position. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, a ground ball to first base brought her home.
The Panther offense was held in check until the bottom of the fourth, as a parade of bunts and pair of errors opened the doors for Adelphi. Following Shreter reaching on an error and Kellogg bunting for a single, Courtney Wengryn's bunt was thrown away down the first base line, allowing both Shreter and Kellogg to score giving the Brown and Gold a one score lead.
The visiting squad answered back in a big way in the next top half, scoring six runs on six hits. Highlighted by Donovan and Jordyn Resetar each smacking RBI doubles, silencing the packed crowd, put the Cats in a five run deficit.
As offense continued to dissipate for the home squad, a seventh inning double from Angeline Montañez put the crowd on their feet. Unfortunately, consecutive putouts ended the afternoon, solidfying the split.
