Worcester, Mass. - Anchored by eight runs batted in courtesy of
Ellen Tarjan, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Assumption University on Tuesday afternoon, by the final scores of 10-0 and 0-8 on the road.
Game 1: Adelphi 10, Assumption 0 (F/5)
The Brown and Gold bats came out to play in the early action, combining for six runs across the final two frames.
Sanzone notched the first hit of the day with a single to left field, and sophomore Tarjan followed with a single of her own to score the first run for the visitors.
Starting pitcher
Lily Kenney had a stellar outing in the circle, holding the Greyhounds to just one hit through four innings. Furthermore, a dazzling 5-4-3 double play erased a baserunner to end the second inning.
In the top of the fourth, Tarjan shot a pitch down the left field line, eventually clearing the fence to score teammates
Brianna Pearson and Sanzone.
After a three-run fourth inning, the fifth had even more in store. Despite two groundouts to start the frame, a
Reeghan McCarthy double sparked a two-out rally.
Courtney Wengryn then hit a two-bagger of her own, plating McCarthy to increase the Panther advantage to five.
Three consecutive walks - the last of which drawn by
Maddy Moore - increased that number to six. As Tarjan came to the plate once more, she smacked a 2-0 pitch down the left field line, pinging off the foul pole The round-tripper put double digits on the scoreboard in favor of the Cats.
Kenney allowed her second hit of the day to start the home half of the fifth via a triple. Three subsquent popups however, earned the sophomore her ninth win of 2025.
Game 2: Adelphi 0, Assumption 8 (F/5)
The nightcap saw a much different story, with the Panther bats going quiet over the day's last five innings.
Things unraveled quickly for Adelphi, as Assumption's Kaitlyn Cahill stole second and third after being hit by a pitch to lead off the game. She then scored the first run on a wild pitch.
Momentum never materialized for the Brown and Gold, as a single from Wengryn stood as their only hit through three frames.
A wild six-run inning ensued in the third, as two HBP's and a single loaded the bases for the hosts. A combination of two base hits, and a fielder's choice coupled with a throwing error scored five out of the six runs for the Greyhounds, leaving Adelphi reeling.
Bianca Vincequere sacrificed via bunt for the crucial eighth run in the fourth to impose the run rule on behalf of the home team. Although Moore reached on the fifth hit by pitch of the game, the final three were sat down in order to produce a late victory for Assumption.
Jenna Plue was tagged with the loss - her 12th of the season. Both Plue and reliever
Tori Parente were each credited with four earned runs.
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will be back in action on Thursday, Apr. 24 following a slew of schedule changes to the final weekend of the regular season.
