New Haven, Conn. - A nine-goal second quarter powered the no. 10 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program to a 19-11 victory on Saturday, taking down Southern Connecticut at Jess Dow Field.
Alexandra Leggio posted a seven-point performance, courtesy of five goals and a pair of assists -
Marielle Colalillo notched her 100th career point with her assist on the first goal of the second frame, en route to six points. Three others tallied four or more points in the win, including five goals from
Ashley Kolomechuk.
The home team posted a trio of goals before Adelphi (13-3, 9-1 NE10) found the back of the cage - but once the did, the goals did not stop coming. The Panthers were responsible for eight unanswered goals through the early going of the second quarter, but was broken up by an Owl goal at 9:04.
Before the halftime break, the Brown and Gold tacked on five more goals, en route to a 13-6 edge at the buzzer.
SCSU kicked off the third with their fourth tally of the game, but another pair of goals - courtesy of Kolomechuk and
Julia Foppiano - didn't allow the hosts for any momentum to overcome their deficit. The home team managed to outscore Adelphi 4-3 in the final frame, but the damage was already too great to overcome.
Seeding for the NE10 Championship will be released later this evening. An eight-team tournament, the women are slated to host a first-round playoff game on Saturday, Apr. 26.
