Garden City N.Y.- A 10-goal first quarter aided a dominating 22-9 win for the no. 2 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program over no. 7 Southern Connecticut State University, in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Saturday.
After the Owls (10-9) appeared to set the tone by scoring on their first possession, the Panthers quickly changed the outlook, netting eight unanswered goals to ignite the Motamed Field crowd. Sophomore Julia Foppiano controlled the first 15 minutes, totaling seven points, as she and Ashley Kolomechuk proved to be thorns in the side of the SCSU defense en route to a 10-goal opening period.
From there, the Panthers kept the momentum rolling. Payson Hedges went on her own 3-0 run to extend the Brown and Gold's lead to 11.
Soon after, Alexandra Leggio and Marielle Colalillo each tallied their second goals of the game, putting an exclamation mark on the first half and sending the teams into intermission with Adelphi commanding a 15-3 advantage.
Out of the break, the home team stayed in stride, with a Rita Sefransky goal kicking things off. Colalillo then recorded two more tallies to cap a five-goal quarter, sending the Panthers into the final fifteen minutes with a comfortable lead.
Although the visitors outscored the Brown and Gold 4-2 in the final frame, it was too little, too late, as the home squad had built a lead too great to overcome.
The Panthers are on the prowl heading into their semifinal matchup, where they will host No. 6 Assumption. The Greyhounds make their way to Garden City after pulling off a first-round upset over No. 3 New Haven on Saturday afternoon. Start time for the semifinal is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Motamed Field.
