West Haven, Conn. — After a tough walkoff loss on Friday, the Adelphi baseball team returned to the field on Saturday afternoon to finish up its series against New Haven.
Game 1: Adelphi 11, New Haven 3
The offense got going in this one in the top of the third inning. A James Eden walk and Johnny Catusoco single put two runners on for Joe Pellegrino, who capitalized, doubling to left field to score the game's first run. Matt Ryan then worked the count and came through with a two RBI single to center field. The runs kept on coming in as Jack Tate was hit by a pitch to put two runners in for Bryan McCleary. McCleary crushed his first home run of the season to put the Cats up six.
The six run margin was more than enough for Adelphi ace Dawson Montesa as he was once again lights out. Working into the ninth, he finished the game with a final line of 8.1 innings pitched, one walk, two earned runs, five hits and 11 strikeouts on 115 pitches.
Adelphi continued to support their pitcher throughout his start, scoring one more in the fourth and four in the eighth after Jack Wishner cleared the bases with a double.
The Brown and Gold went on to win 11-3.
Game 2: Adelphi 5, New Haven 8
Just like in game one, the Panthers struck in the third inning. Catuosco drove in the run after an RBI single to left center.
Unfortunately for Adelphi, New Haven came back with five in the bottom half to take the lead.
The Cats responded quickly as an Erick Duignan home run got the score to 5-4. A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth put the Chargers back up two and Adelphi's offense seemingly could not recover from it.
The Panthers would get back within one, but New Haven struck back with two of its own to win the game 8-5.
Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team will return to the field on Tuesday to take on Queens at 3:30 PM.
