Baseball Drops Non-Conference Tilt to Queens, 5-3

Flushing, N.Y. — Tuesday brought another early week non-conference tilt for head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team as they took the short trip to Queens College.

Greyson Pizzonia began the game with a leadoff triple and two batters later, Jack Tate would drive him in for the first run of the game.

Carlos Acosta got the start for the Panthers and worked a scoreless first and second before running into trouble in the third. A single, hit by pitch and two stolen bases put runners in the scoring position for the Knights and they were able to capitalize, grabbing a 2-1 lead in the frame.

Adelphi remained scoreless as Queens got to reliever Cam Letourneau in the fifth, playing some same ball with a walk and a bunt single to set the table. C.J. Forman came on to limit the damage but the home team left the fifth with a 5-1 lead.

Forman was very solid, pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh to keep the Cats in the ballgame. The Adelphi bats finally woke up in the top half of the seventh as Erick Duignan connected for this second home run of the season. Pizzonia singled two batters later and Jack Wishner drove him in with a single to right field.

The Panthers threatened again in the eighth with runners on the corners but Tate was caught trying to steal home after an errant throw to second by the Queens catcher and the rally was thwarted. Colin Richardson pitched a scoreless bottom half and in the ninth C.J. Picone put the Panthers in a good spot with a lead off double off of the left field wall.

With two outs, Pizzonia walked to put the tying run on for Wishner. The shortstop lofted a ball to his Queens counterpart who had a nice beat on the ball and grabbed to seal the 5-3 win for the Knights.

Pizzonia was a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-4 with a single, double and triple.

The Adelphi baseball team will return to field on Saturday at 10:30 AM to take on Saint Anselm.
