Softball Shuts Out SCSU Across 16 Innings En Route to Sweep

Garden City, N.Y. - Anchored by stellar pitching across both games, the Adelphi University softball team won both legs of its doubleheader on Friday afternoon against Southern Connecticut State University, by the final scores of 2-0 and 1-0.

Game 1: Adelphi 2, Southern Connecticut State 0
The matinee saw an immediate strike from the Brown and Gold, with the lead sustaining for the rest of the early action.

Julianna Sanzone got the party started with an RBI single to score Courtney Wengryn, who had just doubled to get on base. Reeghan McCarthy added to the hit column with a single in the next inning, as Sanzone and Wengryn did another double-single sequence in the third that wasn't able to produce a run.

Courtney Murphy poked one through the left side to reach in the fourth. Tori Parente then joined in on the slug-fest, doubling to left field to score Murphy and make it 2-0 Panthers.

Starting pitcher Lily Kenney continued her recent path of dominance in the first game, only allowing three hits through six innings on five strikeouts. She also walked a batter, just her second since March 4.

As the pressure mounted in the seventh, Kenney remained strong, retiring the Owls in swift fashion to earn her eighth win of the season. The Cats used multi-hit games from Murphy, Sanzone, and Wengryn en-route to nine hits for the first win of the day.

Game 2: Adelphi 1, Southern Connecticut State 0 (F/9)
Later action depicted a stare down until the very end, as the two sides went into extra innings..

Jenna Plue put on a masterclass in pitching, fanning 10 for a new season-high, with just three hits. Only one of those hits came after the fifth inning, without allowing any in the extra frames.

Angelina Kellogg notched the first hit of the game in the opener, but Adelphi struggled to put hits together in consecutive frames. Murphy slapped together two singles throughout the contest, but both times it stood as the only knock before the third out was recorded.

Plue struck out all three of the Owl batters in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extras in thrilling fashion.

Ellen Tarjan singled early in the eighth, leading to runners on first and second with two outs. A popup from Zee Zee Shreter later sent the game into the ninth.

Wengryn got things going with a double, her third between both games on the afternoon. Angeline Montañez entered the game as a pinch runner, making her way to third following a passed ball.

Sanzone then came up clutch yet again, as her single to the right side brought in the lone run of the game, giving the Cats their third win in four games.

Head Coach Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will now take the weekend off and return to action when they travel to Assumption University on Tuesday, April 22. First pitch from Worcester, Mass. is scheduled for 2 p.m..
