Baseball Drops Heartbreaker to New Haven, Loses 5-4 in the Ninth

West Haven, Conn. — Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team returned to Northeast-10 conference play for an important tilt with New Haven.

Billy Kind got the start for the Panthers and had an excellent first three innings; leaving the Chargers scoreless but Adelphi could not get on the board either until the fourth inning.

Joe Pellegrino got the frame started with a one out double followed by a Johnny Catuosco walk. Jack Wishner then singled to score the first run of the game and an error from the Nee Haven first baseman scored the second. With a runner on third, Giancarlo Rengifo drove in the Panthers' third run by way of a sacrifice fly and after a walk and stole base, a James Eden RBI single gave Adelphi a 4-0 lead.

A single and a wild pitch put New Haven in good position as they were able to get one back after an RBI single. The fifth had nothing going for the Cats and the Chargers were able to capitalize.

New Haven started its two out rally after a single, walk, wild pitch and error by the Panther third baseman. The error brought in a run and then a wild pitch and RBI single would bring in two more to tie the ballgame. The bases were then loaded but Jake Sekinaki was able to strike out the batter to avoid any further damage.

Neither offense was able to get anything done, combining for only two hits, until the ninth. Alex Rende started the top half of the inning off with a single and then a steal of second before advancing to third after a wild pitch. Anthony Rigogliosi and Catuosco both walked to load the bases but the Adelphi bats were kept quiet as the Brown and Gold could not score.

The Chargers carried this momentum into the bottom of the ninth, walking the Panthers off with two outs thanks to an RBI single.

Adelphi will return to the field tomorrow at noon for a doubleheader against New Haven to complete the series.
