#10 Women's Lacrosse Overcomes #17 New Haven, 12-9

Garden City, N.Y. - In it's penultimate matchup of the regular season, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team pulled off a come from behind victory to top #17 New Haven on Wednesday, handing them their first league loss by a final score of 12-9.

The Chargers (11-4, 8-1 NE10) are coming off an identical score victory against no. 9 Pace which now puts a three-way tie at the top of the Northeast-10 Conference standings, heading into the final weekend of regular season action.

Adelphi (11-3, 8-1 NE10) got out to a slow start, finding themselves trailing by three after eight minutes of work. New Haven's leading scorer Katie Schenk tallied a pair in the stretch to make it 4-1 in favor of the the visitors.

Julia Foppiano kicked off a three-goal spurt for the Cats that eventually knotted the game at four-all on an Amanda Lee strike. After trading a pair of goals, it was the Chargers who got the last word in before the halftime pause, as Summer Castiglione found the back of the cage to make it 7-6. A pair of yellow cards came through on the home team and a late foul gave New Haven an opportunity to go up two at the break, but Madison Marchetta got the stop - her third of the game - to keep it a one-goal margin.

Rita Sefransky's tally at 13:09 in the third gave the hosts their first lead of the contest, and it was Adelphi who outscored the Chargers 3-2 to make it another stalemate heading into the fourth quarter.

Up and down the field both teams went as several failed clear attempts took place before Ashley Kolomechuk connected with Foppiano to break the silence and make it 10-9, Adelphi. A scramble in the Panthers' offensive zone saw two shots before Kolomechuk landed her 49th goal of the season to put the hosts up by two with under six minutes to play. A huge stop by Marchetta on another free position attempt made way for Payson Hedges to convert and attempt of her own, slamming the door on the no. 17 Chargers.

New Haven had two shots ring out off the goal posts in the final two minutes, but regulation came to a close before any damage was done.

The Panther defense was led by Kristen Birney, who tallied a career-best five caused turnovers in the statement win.

Head Coach Pat McCabe and his squad head to Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, Apr. 19 for its regular season finale at 4:00 p.m.
