Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

#5 Men's Lacrosse Picks Up Statement Win Over #8 Pace, 16-6

Garden City, N.Y. — In a battle of two top-10 nationally ranked teams, the no. 5 Adelphi University men's lacrosse program secured a much needed Northeast-10 Conference win over no. 8 Pace University, by a score of 16-6.

Adelphi (12-1, NE10 6-1) was able to control the game on both the offensive and defensive end, while handing the Setters (10-2, NE10 6-1) their first conference loss.

Prior to the start of the contest, Adelphi students took part in a tailgate sponsored by the athletic department, the Student Government Association, and Greek Life. Students were able to show off their Panther pride while helping lift the team to one of their largest wins over Pace all-time and their 14th straight win over the Setters.

Sophomore Braden Donnellan kicked off the scoring for the home team, finding the back of the net just under two minutes into the opening quarter. After two more Adelphi goals, Pace got on the board via a man down goal from Jake Cenci. The Brown and Gold regained a three-goal lead heading into the second frame.

It took Noah Gibson just 49 seconds to beat Pace netminder Jack Kern for his first of three goals on the night to open up the second. Facing a five goal deficit early, the Pace offense was able to rattle off three unanswered and keep the ball in the home team's defensive zone for a majority of the quarter. Leading scorer for the Setters, Daniel Zabbia entered the game averaging just over three points per game (ranking second in the league behind Gibson) and was held to a mere two points, scoring his only goal of the night in this stretch.

Pace's Osei Adoma helped fuel the run with a long-pole goal, eventually bringing the score to 6-4. Adelphi didn't go down quietly, as Michael Durnin scored on a Gibson feed with 1:49 remaining in the first half.

The Setters didn't score again until mid-way through the fourth quarter, as the Cats put eight goals past a trio of Pace goalies. Senior Nick O'Shea started the Adelphi run as the team went on to score three goals within 90 seconds, with goals from Durnin and Kyle Lewis

In the fourth quarter, Pace's goalie Hunter Wilcox caught the Panther defense off guard and was able to put one into the back of the net with an uncommon goalie goal. With just over two minutes left to play, Vincent McDermott scored the final tally of the game to make it 16-6 in favor of the hosts.

Durnin led the home team in scoring with four goals, while Gibson and Donnellan each had six points in the win. Donnellan has scored six or more points in five out of the last six games, as he continues to lead DII in points per game. In between the pipes, grad student Dylan Renner racked up nine saves, while marking his 12th win of the season.

At X, first year William Greaves continued to find wins for his team, finishing the night 13-for-16 with 10 ground balls.

The Panthers will close out the regular season on the road on Saturday. Opening faceoff at Franklin Pierce is set for noon.

Following the conclusion of games on Saturday, seeding for the NE10 tournament will be released. First round action is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 with the highest seeds hosting throughout the playoff and the top two-seeds receiving a first round bye.
