Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Franklin Pierce

Rindge, N.H. — The Adelphi baseball team headed up to Franklin Pierce on Sunday for a conference doubleheader.

Game 1: Adelphi 7, Franklin Pierce 9
Dawson Montesa toed the slab for the 'Cats, but the Ravens were able to get to him early, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first.

Both offenses were quiet until the fourth when Adelphi exploded for five runs. A Joe Pellegrino walk and Johnny Catousco double started the inning off before the two out rally began. Bryan McCleary drove in Catuosco on a single up the middle and then James Eden drove in two more after he singled himself. The Panthers batted around and Pellegrino hit an infield single to drive in another run and put Adelphi up 5-1.

Franklin Pierce would not go away as they got one back in the bottom half of the inning and then tied the game in the fifth after an error, passed ball, wild pitch, walk and an RBI single.

In the top of the sixth the Panthers regained the lead after an Eden single, Jack Tate hit by pitch and Pellegrino RBI fielder's choice.

The game stayed at 6-5 until the bottom of the seventh when the Ravens tied the ballgame up after a sacrifice fly.

Adelphi regained the lead in the next half inning once again putting together some hits with two outs. Eden, Tate and Pellegrino all got on base and a Catuosco walk put the Panthers up one.

The bottom of the eighth was when Franklin Pierce gained control of the ballgame as a two-out three run home run put the Ravens ahead 9-7.

An Adelphi rally was thwarted and the home team took game one 9-7.

Game 2: Adelphi 3, Franklin Pierce 9
Just like in game one, Adelphi got off to a hot start in game two. With two outs, Matt Ryan walked followed by a Pellegrino single. Catusoco drove in Ryan with an RBI single followed by a Jack Wishner RBI single.

Franklin Pierce responded immediately, scoring four in the bottom half of the first after four hits and a walk. The Ravens added two more runs in the second and third with a pair of RBI singles to take a 6-2 lead.

A Pellegrino double in the top of the fifth led to a Catuosco RBI single but that would be all of the runs the Panthers could scrape across.

The Ravens added three more in the fifth and sixth to take the second game 9-3 in seven innings.

Pellegrino ended the day 3-5 with two RBI, Catuosco went 4-8 with three RBI and Eden went 4-8 at the top of the lineup.

Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Brown and Gold will return to the field on Tuesday afternoon to take on the College of Staten Island on the road at 3:30 PM
