Colchester, Vt. — Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team returned to the field on Saturday to finish up their series against Saint Michael's.
The Panthers got on the board early as Joe Pellegrino drove in Johnny Catuosco in the first to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead.
Billy Kind kept the Purple Knights scoreless in the bottom half but they came back in the second with a pair of singles and an RBI groundout to tie the game.
Saint Michael's would take the lead in the bottom of the third courtesy of a two-run home run, but in the fourth the Panthers struck back. Jack Tate started the frame off with a solo home run followed by singles from Jack Wishner and Giancarlo Rengifo. James Eden then would drive Wishner in on an infield single to tie the game at three a piece.
The bottom of the fourth was when Saint Michael's took control. A pair of singles and a wild pitch led to an RBI groundout and a 4-3 lead for the home team. Then, a three run homer down the right field line put them up four.
Both offenses were sleepy until the seventh when Adelphi got back on the board. Pellegrino and Tate started the inning off with two walks and Matt Ryan drove in a run with an RBI single. Rengifo would come up with runners on the corners and drive in Tate with a single through the left side to get the score to 7-5.
In the bottom half, Saint Mike's struck for two more with two outs to go up four runs. The Purple Knights' bullpen was strong and although Adelphi was able to score two in the bottom of the ninth, it would not be enough as the Brown and Gold fell 9-7.
The Adelphi baseball team will return to field on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Franklin Pierce.
