Tampa, Fla. - In continuation of the team's Florida road trip, the Adelphi University softball team was swept in its doubleheader against University of Tampa on Saturday afternoon, by the final scores of 6-0 and 8-0.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Tampa 6
The matinee started off slow, with the Panthers holding the hosts to just one run through the first four frames.
A wild pitch put that initial run across the plate following a single that got the runner to third base.
Reeghan McCarthy scrapped together the first hit for the Panthers with a single through the left side in the top of the second.
Starting pitcher
Jenna Plue held her own in the second, third, and fourth innings, only allowing two hits and keeping the Spartans at bay. While
Julianna Sanzone carried a ball down the left field line in the top half of the fourth, the Brown and Gold couldn't generate any further momentum.
Mariah Galhouse later connected on a two-RBI single to put two more scores on the Spartan side. A sacrifice fly and another wild pitch turned the fifth into a four-run affair for the home team.
Gwen McGinnis retired the final ten batters for Adelphi, improving her record to 9-0 on the season with nine strikeouts in a complete game outing.
Game 2: Adelphi 0, Tampa 8 (F/5)
The nightcap consisted of a slower start, with Tampa once again wearing on the scoring as the game progressed.
Three bases in the first inning was in order for the Spartans' Kinnah Kreidler who netted a triple with two outs. Starter
Tori Parente escaped the jam with a groundout two plate appearances later.
With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the third, a forceout at home going to catcher
Amanda Chavarria took care of one. However, an errant throw to first in an attempt to turn a double play resulted in two runs coming across to break the ice.
Two three-baggers kicked off the fourth for Tampa, upping their total to three on the day and scoring for the third time. Another throwing error and sacrifice fly accumulated another two runs by inning's end.
Lily Kenney appeared in relief for Parente, with her first full inning coming in the fifth. After retiring two of the first three batters, two consecutive doubles brought home two runs to give the Spartans their seventh run.
An immediate single courtesy of Lilly Keister tallied the eighth run in Game 2, ending the game in walk-off fashion via the run rule.
Head Coach Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers return to play on Monday, March 10 against Florida Tech. First pitch from Melbourne, Fla. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
