Melbourne, Fla. - In the second weather delay within the last week, the Adelphi University softball team lost both legs of its doubleheader against Florida Institute of Technology on Monday afternoon, by the final scores of 8-3 and 6-1.
Game 1: Adelphi 3, Florida Tech 8
The matinee started with early Panther offense, resulting in a high-scoring affair.
Courtney Murphy and
Julianna Sanzone reached base immediately via a single and throwing error.
Brianna Pearson knocked one to left field loading the bases, with
Ellen Tarjan drilling two runs home to give the 'Cats an early lead.
The opposing Panthers responded in the home half with a triple and groundout to cut the deficit in half. In the following frame, a quick steal and errant throw by catcher
Maddy Moore tied the game up at two-all.
With Florida Tech continuing to play small ball, the inning ended in a two-run advantage following a single.
Tarjan became the source of offense once again in the top of the third, putting the Brown and Gold back within one by scoring
Reeghan McCarthy off a double.
Despite
Jenna Plue holding the home Panthers to one hit combined over the next two frames, the game began to open back up in the sixth following a couple of two-baggers stretching the lead up to three.
Lily Kenney appeared in relief to close the game, going for two thirds of an inning allowing two hits and an earned run to end the early action.
Game 2: Adelphi 1, Florida Tech 6
The nightcap also saw the visiting Panthers strike first, only to be followed up by unanswered offense from Florida Tech.
Angelina Kellogg this time hit a ball up the middle in the second inning to break the ice and put the 'Cats on top.
Not allowing a hit through the first and second frames, starting pitcher
Tori Parente continued to hold a shutout through three along with fanning one.
A fielder's choice for the home Panthers tied up the contest at one-all. A subsequent single with two runners in scoring position put the Brown and Gold on the wrong side of the scoreboard, with both coming home to end the fourth inning.
Tarjan was struck by a pitch in the sixth and later advanced to second base, serving as Adelphi's first runner in scoring position in three innings. A flyout from
Meghan Fisher ended that momentum, with Florida Tech tacking on three more insurance runs in the home half.
Ava Hershkovitz came up in a pinch hit spot for
Jordyn Pasqueralli and put the visitors back on base. Angeline Montañez connected on another ball to left field to collect a multi-hit inning for the team. Sanzone's flyout ended the seventh and the game.
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will be back in action tomorrow against Embry-Riddle (Fla.). First pitch from Daytona Beach, Fla. is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
