Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Swept by Saint Leo After Weather Delay

Saint Leo, Fla. - Playing their third and fourth games in just over 24 hours, the Adelphi University softball team dropped both legs of its doubleheader against Saint Leo University on Wednesday evening, by the final scores of 5-2 and 8-2.

Game 1: Adelphi 2, Saint Leo 5
The matinee was pushed back due to a weather delay, causing the set of two contests to be played starting at 6 p.m.

While the Brown and Gold didn't get a run across in the first frame, Jordyn Pasqueralli and Ellen Tarjan managed to apply some pressure. The tandem found themselves on second and third with just one out before Chloe Hocquard got herself out of the jam. An RBI single broke the ice in favor of the Lions in the bottom half before the inning came to a close.

Pressure continued to mount against starting pitcher Jenna Plue in the second frame. Two singles proved to be pivotal later in the inning as a fielders choice and sacrifice fly brought both runs home to triple the early margin.

Pasqueralli's speed on the basepaths earned her two steals in the third, standing only 60 feet from home plate with no outs. However, two strikeouts and a popup thwarted any potential momentum.

After an insurance run for the Lions in the fourth, Adelphi responded with a two-run inning to start the fifth. Courtney Murphy singled to drive home Brianna Pearson to put the 'Cats on the board, while Tori Parente scored freshman Maddy Moore

Saint Leo added another run in the bottom half, and the final four batters for the Panthers were retired, ending the matinee.

Game 2: Adelphi 2, Saint Leo 8
The nightcap showed more offense at play, highlighted by a five-run opening frame for the home team.

Haleigh Thomas' two-run double capped off the inning, as the Lions brought all nine batters to the plate.

While Parente was given the Game 2 start, Lily Kenney came in relief after the explosive first inning. The sophomore held her own for the following couple frames and change, allowing zero runs.

The next strike came in the fourth, with another two-RBI single upping the run total to seven for the home team. The lone scores for the Panthers followed in the sixth, with Julianna Sanzone and Makayla Comer both bringing home runners to get Saint Leo calling to the bullpen.

Murphy did reach again in the seventh, but three consecutive outs ended their evening.

Head Coach Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will be back in action on Friday, March 7 against Rollins College. First pitch from Winter Park, Fla. is scheduled for 4 p.m.
