Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team played in front of their home crowd for the first time in 2025 when the Panthers hosted Kutztown on Tuesday afternoon.
John Carver started the game for 'Cats and found himself in some trouble early on. A leadoff single by the Golden Bears' left fielder led to a steal of second and a walk to give Kutztown two on and nobody out. The next batter would ground into a fielders choice and with runners on the corners, Carver would dig in. The senior struck out the Kutztown cleanup hitter and got the next batter to roll into a fielder's choice to escape the jam.
There was nothing going for Adelphi in the bottom half of the inning and both teams went scoreless in the second. The Golden Bears got on the board first in the third inning, but the Panthers got the run back after an Alex Rende single. Rende was able to move to third after a stolen base and throwing error but the 'Cats could not grab the lead.
Kutztown went up 2-1 in the top of the fifth on Nick Varda's second RBI of the afternoon. From there, Carver settled down and finished the game with a quality start, going 7.0 IP with two earned runs and six strikeouts.
The seventh inning was when the Panthers would strike. Matt Ryan hit a first pitch single to start the bottom half of the frame off and was able to advance to second on a throwing error from the left fielder. James Eden came in to pinch run for Ryan and on the next pitch, Anthony Rigogliosi (who went 4-4) laid a perfect bunt down the third base line for a single and to move over Eden. An errant pick off attempt scored Eden from third before Jack Wishner moved Rigogliosi to second on a SAC bunt.
Kutztown then made a pitching change, but that would not matter as Greyson Pizzonia smacked a single to give Adelphi a 3-2 lead. Rende was next up and he smoked a triple into the right field gap, scoring Pizzonia before scoring himself after an Albert Ramos groundout.
Adelphi ended the seventh a 5-2 lead, but they were not done there as they struck for six more runs in the eighth thanks to some timely hitting by Bryan McCleary, Wishner, Rende and Johnny Catuosco.
Zach Rovner closed the door in the ninth as the Panthers won their third game in a row by a score of 11-2.
Rende drove in a career-high four RBI while going 3-5.
Rigogliosi's four hits are his most in a single game so far in his career.
Catuosco picked up his first two RBI of the season.
The Panthers return to the field on Friday at noon when they take on Wilmington (Del.) at the Cary Invitational in Cary, N.C.
