Springfield, Mass. — Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team traveled up to American International College on Friday afternoon for a Northeast-10 doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets.
Game 1: Adelphi 2, AIC 3
The first game of the day was an absolute pitchers' duel as neither man on the hill allowed a hit until the fourth inning.
Jack Carr got the start for the Panthers and dazzled. The graduate student finished with a final line of 7.0 innings pitched, one earned run, two hits and eight strikeouts.
AIC got on the board in the fourth as a two-out triple drove in the first run of the game. Nothing was going for the Adelphi offense as the home team would gain a two run lead after some defensive miscues by the Panthers.
Once the Yellow Jackets' starter was out of the game, the 'Cats got to the bullpen. Bryan McCleary started the eighth with a leadoff single followed by a single from James Eden. With two runners on the three hitter Johnny Catuosco singled himself to drive in the first Adelphi run of the game. Jack Wishner would tie the game just two batters later with a two-out RBI single to center field.
Nothing was going for AIC in the eighth and the Panthers could capitalize on an Alex Rende walk in the ninth. The first Yellow Jacket hitter of the ninth inning hit a walk off home run to give AIC a 3-2 win.
Game 2: Adelphi 9, AIC 15
Adelphi started off the scoring in the second game of the day thanks to a Jake Tate RBI single in the second inning.
AIC would then respond, taking a 2-1 lead itself but the Panthers tied the game in the third after Rende tripled and Joe Pellegrino drove him in on a single.
The third inning was when the game started to get away from the 'Cats. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-2 lead after four straight hits and a two-run home run.
In the top of the sixth with the score at 7-3, the Panthers started to make some noise. A leadoff triple from Wishner would wake up the Adelphi bats as a Tate double, Matt Ryan single, Eden walk and Rende triple would have the 'Cats circle the bases and tie the game at seven.
Unfortunately for the Brown and Gold, the tie would not last long. AIC regained an edge on its third batter of the bottom half of the inning and keep adding on, going up 12-7. The home team added on three more in the eighth and while Matt Ryan drove in two for the Panthers in the ninth, it would not be enough as the 'Cats fell, 15-9.
Adelphi will return to the field on Saturday at noon when they take on the Yellow Jackets in another doubleheader.
