Garden City, N.Y. - With a walk-off hit courtesy of
Courtney Wengryn, , the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Bentley University on Saturday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field, by the final scores of 4-1 and 5-4.
Game 1: Adelphi 1, Bentley 4
The matinee saw the Falcons get out to an early lead, using that leverage to sustain an early victory.Â
Tallying a quick triple on the second batter, two later doubles gave Bentley the first pair of runs.Â
Looking to rival the same production in the home half, the 'Cats put two on following
Julianna Sanzone reaching on balls. A key strikeout from the opposing starter Riley Piromalli thwarted that momentum however.Â
Another insurance run scored for the Blue and White after Bella Burke, who knocked the triple earlier in the day, nabbed her second extra-base hit in as many innings.Â
As Adelphi left three on base over the next three frames, the fifth saw the greatest home threat for offense. With the bases loaded after
Zee Zee Shreter,
Courtney Murphy, and Sanzone reached,
Brianna Pearson stepped to the plate.Â
Roping a liner to third, a tough throw required the first baseman to leap to pull it down, giving just enough time for Pearson to reach the bag and score Shreter, breaking the shutout.Â
Even with two more coming on in the sixth, a 1-2-3 seventh for the Bentley defense ended the early action.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 5, Bentley 4 (F/8)
The nightcap featured a much slower burn, with both teams going scoreless for the first four innings.Â
Two walks from Shreter and Wengryn put two on in the first frame, but a consecutive flyout and popup kept the game deadlocked at zero.Â
When Bentley responded with putting two of their own on in the third, a clutch 6-4-3 double play started by
Reeghan McCarthy and finished by a strong throw from
Angelina Kellogg sent the Ficke Field crowd into a frenzy, sending us to the fourth.Â
Following an error from Adelphi starting pitcher
Jenna Plue, the junior transfer forced two balls to go airborne, corralled easily to start the home half.Â
Wengryn and Sanzone reached immediately on an error and single, respectively.
Makayla Comer loaded the bases after getting hit by Bentley starter Breelin McDougal. The sophomore retired the next three, making the visiting crowd get loud.Â
The Panthers built more momentum in the fifth, this time capitalizing to strike first. Wengryn snuck a ball just inside the left field foul line, scoring
Jordyn Pasqueralli. Mirroring her fellow graduate, Sanzone lined one with the same path to bring home an extra two, increasing the lead to three.Â
With a relatively quiet sixth, the seventh proved to be a back-and-forth saga, not for the faint of heart. While starter
Jenna Plue had kept the Falcons at bay for the previous six, the road team loaded the bases with one out after two errors and a single.Â
As the team's leader in hits Jordan Krause emerged to the plate, a deep fly ball to center field soon careened over the fence, putting Bentley back on top to stun the home crowd.Â
Game 1 starter Riley Piromalli entered the game in relief looking to close out the 'Cats. Freshman
Meghan Fisher then squared up the first pitch she saw and sent it towering to left-center field, hitting off the scoreboard to tie the contest at four-all.Â
Two singles from Pasqueralli and Shreter, followed by Fisher absorbing some contact to load the bases. Wengryn ended the day as a hero, as her fly ball to center was too deep for the Falcons to handle, as the Brown and Gold earned the split.Â
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 25 when they travel to Molloy University. First pitch from Rockville Centre, N.Y. is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.Â
