Garden City N.Y. - On a windy day in Garden City, the Adelphi University softball team swept its doubleheader against Georgian Court University on Friday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field, by the final scores of 5-3 and 8-0.
Game 1: Adelphi 5, Georgian Court 3
The opener of doubleheader action featured visiting Georgian Court getting out to an early lead, but the Panthers found a way to get the job done in the gritty comeback.
Fast forward to the third frame, GCUÂ offense scraped three across 'Cats starter
Jenna Plue, after she gave up two walks and a hit by Ella Moore bringing home the first run of the game. Soon after, Lia DeMaio found the right center gap to bring in two more extending their lead.
Adelphi answered back in the bottom half with
Jordyn Pasqueralli's exhibition on the base paths. The center fielder raced home from second base on a sacrifice bunt by
Amanda Chavarria, sliding in to beat the tag to provide a spark for the Brown and Gold.
After a clean inning from from Plue, the Panther offense strung together three runs to take back the advantage. A small ball approach featuring a Pasqueralli RBI sac fly and defensive lapses from GCU helped
Tori Parente,
Courtney Murphy and
Zee Zee Shreter all cross home.Â
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos handed the ball over toÂ
Lily Kenney in the following frame to protect the lead. Georgian Court's offense threatened to tie the game soon after, loading the bases against Kenney with no one retired. The sophomore pitcher beared down to create weak contact via a popup, ground ball and fly out taking the life out of the visitors and escaping the jam.
The 'Cats got some insurance in the bottom half with cleanup hitter
Julianna Sanzone and
Ellen Tarjan roping back-to-back doubles doubles to further widen the margin to two.
From there, Kenney worked a clean sixth followed up by a 1-2-3 seventh keeping the Lions' bats in check to secure the comeback win.Â
Plue tallied the win, giving her three for the campaign. Sanzone led the offense with two hits for her third multi-hit game this year.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 8, Georgian Court 0 (F/5)
The nightcap held the opposite tone, with the hometown 'Cats bursting for four in the first inning.
Despite a runner reaching third in the top half, the starting pitcher Parente capitalized with a strikeout.Â
Starting off with doubles from
Reeghan McCarthy and
Makayla Comer to net the first two, the real boom came off the bat of
Maddy Moore. The freshman slammed her first round-tripper of her collegiate career past the center field fence to double the early advantage to four.Â
After more insurance came across in the second via a groundout from Angeline Montañez, the piling on began in the third. An RBI single from
Kaitlyn Klepper upped the run total to six, but a couple more came across after Pasqueralli poked one through the right side with two in scoring position.Â
While the Lions tallied a hit for every inning after the first except one, Parente never let any runner get past second base through the fourth inning. The fifth told a different story with the bases getting full following two walks and a single. On the first pitch with two outs, Georgian Court's Isabella Molina lined one straight into third baseman
Meghan Fisher's glove, putting an end to the day.Â
Apostolopoulos and Adelphi will finish their home stand tomorrow (Mar. 22) when they take on Bentley University. First pitch from Ficke Field is scheduled for 12 noon.Â
