Garden City, N.Y. – Kicking off the bulk of Northeast-10 Conference play, the No. 10 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team held off No. 18 Bentley University on Wednesday evening, securing a 12-8 victory to extend its winning streak.
Julia Foppiano led the team with five points (one goal, four assists), while Ashley Kolomechuk continued her offensive push with four goals of her own.
After trading tallies to start the opening frame, Foppiano had the final say for the home team, giving Adelphi a one-goal edge heading into the second quarter. Bentley managed to net a pair of goals to tie the game at 4-4, but Rita Sefransky converted a free-position attempt, igniting a four-goal run for the hosts. Kolomechuk and Payson Hedges each scored within 30 seconds of each other, pushing the Falcons into a four-goal deficit by halftime.
Coming out of the break, however, Bentley outscored the Panthers 3-1, cutting theit deficit to two. An untimely yellow card for Adelphi allowed the visitors to capitalize, turning their three-goal streak into momentum heading into the fourth quarter. A goal at the 9:06 mark for Bentley prompted Head Coach Pat McCabe to call a timeout, as Adelphi's once four-goal lead had shrunk to just one.
Marielle Colalillo, the team's draw control leader with six, netted her third goal of the game just two minutes after Bentley's score in the fourth, reigniting Adelphi's offensive attack. Foppiano then assisted both Alexandra Leggio and Kolomechuk to seal the win and extend the team's streak to five games.
Adelphi returns to action on its home field on Saturday, March 22, when it hosts American International College at noon.
