Daytona Beach, Fla. - Starting with a 12-run performance in Game 1, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) on Tuesday afternoon, by the final scores of 12-2 and 8-0.
Game 1: Adelphi 12, Embry-Riddle 2 (F/5)
The matinee was headlined by two home runs, including a grand slam from graduate transfer
Julianna Sanzone.Â
East Meadow native Sanzone came to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning with the 'Cats leading 4-1. A ball carried out to left center scored all four runs including herself for her first round-tripper of the young 2025 season.Â
Before that early blast,
Brianna Pearson's sacrifice fly and
Ellen Tarjan's single past the infield brought home
Zee Zee Shreter and
Courtney Murphy to give the Brown and Gold a two-run edge right out of the gate.Â
Shreter's single and Murphy reaching on a fielder's choice predated Sanzone's eventual home run. They also helped tack on future insurance runs in the reverse order before the end of the third.Â
Starting pitcher
Lily Kenney took the circle for her first Game 1 of the year, and had a quietly dominating performance. Outside of an opposing home run in the fourth inning, the sophomore pitched a shortened complete game at five innings with one earned run and five hits, along with a strikeout for her second win of the season.Â
Not to be outdone on the home run front, Tarjan responded with one of her own to ignite the fourth frame and give Adelphi an 11-run margin. While the Eagles came back in the home half with a homer of their own, the massive lead was too much to overcome, putting an end to the early action.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 0, Embry-Riddle 8 (F/5)
The nightcap saw a reversing of fortunes in the early frames, with the home team stretching out an early advantage progressively throughout the game.Â
Starting with a double steal in the second, it wasn't until the third when the damage began to pile up. After tallying another run to double their lead to start the inning, a triple and subsequent single ballooned the lead to four by the end of the frame.Â
With
Jenna Plue surviving the wave after the first burst, she retired three straight in the fourth after allowing a leadoff single. Unfortunately, the Panther bats could not keep up with the Eagles offense, as the team was held without a hit through the first four. In fact, Sanzone's walk in the first inning was the lone baserunner up to that point.Â
Tarjan broke up the no-hitter in the fifth, also notching a leadoff single. That momentum couldn't be sustained though, with the next three going down in consecutive order.Â
After Addison Orr collected her third hit of the early afternoon off Plue,
Tori Parente appeared in relief to finish the contest. A double play was in order for the first batter the sophomore faced, but the two-out rally from Embry-Riddle proved to be hard to thwart.Â
The final five batters of the game reached base for the home side, with a single to left field ending the second game early as well due to the run rule.Â
Head Coach
Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers will now return home from their 12-game road trip in Florida. Their home opener against Mercy University is scheduled for this Sunday, March 16. First pitch from Janet L. Ficke Field is set to take place at 12 noon.Â
