Irvine, Calif. - One year and one day since its last loss, the no. 2 Adelphi University men's lacrosse team avenged its loss to no. 14 Rollins College by taking a 16-8 statement win on Monday, in its final contest in California.
"I am incredibly proud of our program for an all-around great trip out west," commented 18-year Head Coach
Gordon Purdie.
"A hard fought victory today against Rollins is just the beginning. We are still discovering our potential and working to improve every day."
After a narrow two-goal lead following the opening frame, the Panthers (6-0) scored the first two goals of the second and never looked back, despite being the only two of the period. Both
Michael Durnin and
Noah Gibson tallied hat tricks in the win, bringing their goal totals for the week up to 11 and 10, respectively.
Miscues from the Tar offense and four saves in the second alone from Adelphi netminder
Dylan Renner kept Rollins to a single score, allowing the Cats to hold on to a three-goal advantage at the halftime break.
Coming out in the third, Nick O'Shea sparked a scoring spree in which the Panthers matched their first half output.
Ries Bower put the exclamation point on the end of the third with a pole goal that fired up the entire north region program.
Despite three goals from the Tars, they were still battling a six goal deficit heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation. After trading goals to start the fourth, Gibson,
Travis Acquilino and Durnin all found the back of the cage with under three minutes to play to seal the deal and evened the odds in just the second time meeting the team from the South.
"This journey to California has truly been a unifying trip for everyone, both on and off the field. And like I always say, 'It's a great week to be a Panther!'"
Purdie and the squad return to the east coast and break until returning to action on Saturday, Mar. 15. The team opens up Northeast-10 Conference action at Saint Michael's College in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
