#6 Women's Lax Outlasts Mercy University, 13-12

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Six different players contributed to the No. 6 Adelphi women's lacrosse victory on Saturday, as the Panthers secured a narrow 13-12 victory over Mercy University to get back into the win column.

After dropping two straight in Florida, the Panthers (2-2) fought hard to maintain their eighth consecutive win against the Mavericks—a streak that was in jeopardy several times throughout the contest.

Adelphi outscored the home team in two of the four quarters and held on for the victory with late goals in both the third and fourth frames.

Ashley Kolomechuk scored and assisted on the first two goals of the contest, with Payson Hedges giving the visitors a 3-0 lead nearly seven minutes into the game. Mercy responded, and the teams found themselves tied at 4-all early in the second quarter. Alexandra Leggio sparked a three-goal run for Adelphi, but the Mavericks answered with four straight goals to take the lead right before halftime.

Hedges netted an equalizer to tie the game again just before the break.

The third quarter started off strong for the hosts, who built a two-goal advantage. However, goals from Michaela Burke, Hedges, and Rita Sefransky gave Adelphi a 12-11 lead. Julia Foppiano found Sefransky just before time expired to give the visiting team an edge heading into the final frame.

Over 12 minutes of scoreless lacrosse dominated the fourth quarter. There were a few turnovers and missed shots until Marielle Colalillo passed to Kolomechuk, who gave Adelphi a two-goal lead with under four minutes to play.

Another draw control win by Mercy's Erin Shimborske set up the Mavericks for another offensive possession. Their first shot went wide, and the next was redirected by Madison Marchetta, but the home team maintained possession. With 2:33 left on the clock, Mercy scored to cut Adelphi's lead to one. A strong defensive stand by the Panthers all but sealed the victory as time expired.

Head Coach Pat McCabe and the squad open Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, March 8, when they head to Franklin Pierce University for a noon matchup. The Panthers are 14-0 all-time against the Ravens, including eight games with 20 or more goals.
