Hartford, Conn. — Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team headed up to Trinity College on Saturday afternoon to take on #9 Southern New Hampshire in a non-conference, neutral site matchup.
In the top of the first, Anthony Rende set the table with a one out walk. After a strike out, Joe Pellegrino came up and smacked an opposite field home run to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead. Albert Ramos followed that up with a single and then Michael Robinson was able to advance Ramos and get to first himself on a dropped third strike. Jack Wishner capitalized on the Penmen's miscue and drove in Ramos on a single.
The three run lead would help Dawson Montesa settle in as he was lights out. The sophomore threw 6 complete innings, allowing only three hits, striking out 10 and allowing no earned runs.
Adelphi's offense sparked again in the top of the sixth. Ramos led the inning off with a walk and after two consecutive Panther outs, the rally was on. Bryan McCleary drew a walk followed by a James Eden hit by pitch. Greyson Pizzonia ripped a ball to SNHU's second baseman, who was unable to make a play, scoring Ramos and McCleary. An errant throw from the right fielder scored Eden and the Brown and Gold took a 6-0 lead.
After Montesa exited in the sixth, Jack Carr entered and earned the save, pitching three innings with four strikeouts as Adelphi picked up a 6-1 upset win over the Penmen.
The Panthers will return to the field on Tuesday for their home opener against Kutztown at 3 p.m.
