Springfield, Mass. - For the first time since November, the Adelphi University women's basketball team has won back-to-back games after a road victory over American International College on Wednesday evening, by a final score of 53-50.
Defense was established early for the Panthers, only allowing one basket through the first four minutes of play. It was a tightly contested first quarter, but two shots from behind the arc coming from
Christina Sanchez helped the visitors get out to a slight 16-15 lead at the end of one.
Once again, back and forth action dictated the next quarter, with the Yellow Jackets taking the lead back about midway through the frame. Another three-ball from Sanchez and a late jumper from
Kaitlyn O'Connell gave the advantage back to the 'Cats. However, a Ruzgar Christina Boyle bucket with a minute left changed the tide, with the hosts heading into the locker room on top.
Rolanda Robinson got the sparks flying in the second half, as her three-pointer ignited another lead change. An ensuing 9-1 run with contributions from
Victoria Morgan and
Ariana Kupi gave Adelphi their largest lead of the night thus far at eight. Boyle hit another deep ball en route to 16 points on the night to trim the margin to five heading into the final ten minutes.
O'Connell connected twice from three-point range in the final frame. The second of those came shortly before a pair of free throws from Robinson, giving the Panthers their largest lead of the night at nine with 3:08 remaining. Six points from AIC's Chelsea Reeves in 37 seconds put the contest inside one possession in the blink of an eye.
An exchange of points from the charity stripe eventually saw the Brown and Gold separated from the Yellow Jackets by just one point with only 43 ticks on the clock. O'Connell tallied her 15th and 16th points of the night following another trip to the line, with it all coming down to an AIC inbound with two seconds to play.
Ahliya Phillips caught the pass and hoisted up a potential game-tying three, but couldn't get it to fall as Adelphi earned their 11th win of the season.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and the Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they travel to Saint Anselm College. Game time from Manchester, N.H. is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
