Winter Park, FL - Playing from behind the entire contest, the no. 6 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-9 loss to no. 21 Rollins College on Tuesday, closing out its southern swing.
In what ended up being a slow start for the 'Cats (1-2), the home team put up five goals in the opening frame and continued their streak through the second. The Tars added four more before Adelphi found a response at 3:42 with a woman-up possession, courtesy of
Payson Hedges.
That slid the team from the north into a groove as they rattled off the next six scores, keeping Rollins scoreless. Their seven-goal stretch brought them within two of the hosts, but the Tars managed to put Adelphi back three with a late tally from Delanie Abere. The Panthers held a 4-2 shot on goal mark in the third frame as each program took five shots total.
Amanda Lee added her first goal since her hat trick at Molloy to kick off the fourth to bring the team back within two, but the home team hit a stride with three of their own to put the game out of reach. It was
Rory Meehan who landed the final strike of the contest, but unfortunately for the Panthers, it was too late.
Alexandra Leggio finished with a team-leading four points behind two converted free position attempts and a pair of helpers. Meehan registered three caused turnoversa and collected a trio of ground balls to go along with her lone goal.
Adelphi will head back north but remain on the road for its next three games. They take on regional foe Mercy University on Saturday, Feb. 1. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
