Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Staten Island

Myrtle Beach, S.C. — The Adelphi baseball team returned to the field on Sunday afternoon to wrap up its trip to the Northeast Classic with a doubleheader against the College of Staten Island.

The Dolphins took an early lead in the top of the first off a Panther error. The score would stay at 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Panthers tied the game up.

Erick Duignan started it off with a single to center field. The next batter, Duignan stole his first base of the season and then advanced on a groundout. The sophomore kept on running and scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Unfortunately for Adelphi, Staten Island responded with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Panther bats went quiet as the Dolphins would tack on three more runs to expand the lead. Joe Pellegrino hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth but it would not be enough as Staten Island took the first game 6-3 in seven innings.

Game two saw a different Adelphi offense as it exploded for five runs in the first inning. With two outs, Johnny Catuosco started it off with a walk. Pellegrino and Albert Ramos would follow with walks of their own and then a balk would score the first Panther run of the game. Right after the balk, Anthony Rigogliosi smacked a single to score two more runs and give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead. Jack Tate then walked and the next batter, Matt Ryan, hit a double to left field to pick up the first two RBI of his career.

Staten Island got a run back in the bottom of the second, but that was all they would be able to muster for the game. Tyler Bonsignore was lights out on the mound, only allowing one run and striking out five in six innings of work.

Adelphi would score five more runs in the game, four of them coming in the fifth from a Ryan double, a Wishner groundout and a Pizzonia triple.

The Panthers went on to win the game 10-1 and improved their record to 2-3. They will return to the field on Thursday at 3 p.m. when they play Mercy on the road.
