Manchester, N.H. - Completing the season sweep, the Adelphi University women's basketball team won its game against Southern New Hampshire University on the road Saturday afternoon, by a final score of 60-50.
The two sides traded blows initially, with the Panthers gaining a slight edge after six unanswered from
Gamila Betton,
Rolanda Robinson, and
Victoria Morgan.
Lateisha Willis' score further spread out the pie, with the 'Cats leading 10-4 after one.Â
Adelphi kept their advantage going in the second frame, but a late spurt from the Penmen put the score within one. AÂ three-point play converted from the hosts' Madison Hughes showed the scoreboard at 16-15, and a later layup from Stephanie Davis knotted up the contest at 19. Senior
Kaitlyn O'Connell tallied the final five for the Brown and Gold, with a step back from range upping the lead to five at the halftime buzzer.Â
SNHU kept the game close coming out of the locker rooms, getting back within one possession courtesy of a Meghan Gordan jumper. A corresponding 14-4 run from the road team finally gave the 'Cats some separation with under two minutes remaining in the quarter.
Lauren Beberman fed
Christina Sanchez with her first basket of the game to end the frame, as Beberman accumulated her sixth assist.Â
As a 15 point lead loomed large above the shoulders of the Penmen, clawing back with a 12-2 run put them right back in the thick of things. With the game staying close, Sanchez hit a vastly important three-pointer to go back up eight with under three to play.Â
Sanchez gave a further cushion to the 'Cats after nailing a set of free throws, netting seven points in two minutes. The game's tension could be felt in the final two minutes, with Adelphi unable to get past a six-point threshold on their lead.Â
O'Connell joined Sanchez in the free throw game, with the two combining to go 4/4 over the final 26 seconds to earn the win.Â
Isabella Asencio, O'Connell, Robinson, and Sanchez combined for 46 of the 'Cats 60. Beberman finished with four blocks and two swipes.Â
