Garden City, N.Y. - Backed by a strong opposing third quarter, the Adelphi University women's basketball team lost its regular season finale against the University of New Haven on Tuesday evening inside the Center for Recreation & Sport, by a final score of 57-42.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the first few minutes. A sequence of
Christina Sanchez hitting a three and
Rolanda Robinson connecting on a floater put the 'Cats out to a hot start. As the Chargers regained the lead in the latter half of the first frame,
Isabella Asencio's layup knotted up the contest at nine before the quarter buzzer.
Sanchez yet again tied the contest at 12-all with another shot beyond the arc. A leading eight points for the junior guard kept the Brown and Gold competitive in the first half. New Haven's Paige Cote capped off the half by knocking down two from the stripe, giving her nine through the first 20 minutes as the Chargers led 21-17.
As the second half got underway, an early score from freshman
Gamila Betton put the game back within four points. From there, the visitors took full control. A 19-0 run ensued, stretching the advantage to 23 over the Panthers. Fellow freshman
Madison Williams broke the dry spell with her first points of the game off a floater.Â
More of the same continued for the final 10 minutes, as the home team went scoreless until the 6:10 mark. Adelphi's defense continued to shine, combining for ten steals and six blocks.
Kaitlyn O'Connell provided a late spark, scoring nine points from behind the three-point line in the final 4:31. Two of those came just 20 seconds apart in back-to-back possessions.Â
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and the Panthers will be back in action for the NE10 Tournament at home on Friday, February 28. Opponent and game time from the CRS is still to be determined. Stay tuned to AUPanthers.com and Adelphi Women's Basketball on Instagram and X for the latest updates.Â
