Myrtle Beach, S.C. — The Adelphi baseball team continued its trip to the Northeast Challenge when it took on Mercy in a Saturday doubleheader.
Mercy struck first in the third inning and after a sacrifice fly, the Mavericks were able to score four more runs to make the game 5-0.
The Panthers could not muster enough offense to come back as Mercy scored two more runs in the fourth to go up seven. Unfortunately for the 'Cats, the Maverick pitching was lights out and the offense was on as Mercy took game one, 15-1.
Joe Pellegrino picked up Adelphi's lone RBI in the game on a double in the bottom of the eighth, scoring James Eden.
In game two, the Panthers were able to get the bats going as they had six hits in the first three innings, but could not get any runs across as the Mercy starter still held them scoreless.
The Mavericks took advantage of Adelphi's inability to score and took a lead of their own in the bottom half of the third on an RBI single.
Mercy added two more runs in the fourth, capitalizing on some Panthers defensive miscues, growing their lead to 3-0 with two unearned runs.
In the top of the fifth the Adelphi offense was able to finally put some runs across, but not in a conventional manner. Greyson Pizzonia started the inning off with a single. Johnny Catuosco and Pellegrino then walked to set the table. Pizzonia scored on a wild pitch and after an Eden walk, Pellegrino was able to score on yet another pitch that got past the catcher. That was all the offense Adelphi got, but it was able to shrink the lead down to one.
Mercy came right back in the bottom half of the fifth and regain a two run lead on a sacrifice fly.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, their bats did not wake up in the sixth or the seventh and they fell 4-2 in seven innings.
Pizzonia, Alex Rende, Pellegrino, Catuosco, Albert Ramos, Eden and Jack Wishner all picked up hits in the game.
Jack Carr struck out four in three innings of work.
Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the 'Cats will return to the field on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader with the College of Staten Island.
