Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Staunch Defense Carries Men's Basketball in 77-55 Win Over Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Adelphi men's basketball team won its fifth game in a row, taking down nearby Mercy University in a balanced 77-55 victory.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (8-1) moves to 15-2 since 2003 against Mercy, putting the Panthers win-streak against the Mavericks now at 10 games. The last game between the two teams was in the 2019-2020 season when Adelphi pulled out an 86-70 win.

Highlights:

  • Reece Brown was the team's leading scorer, putting together his best game as a Panther with 16 points.. The AIC transfer shot 7-9 from the floor and brought down three rebounds.

  • Patrick Burke recorded his first double-double of the season with an 11 point, 12 rebound performance.

  • Jarnel Rancy added five blocks to his nation leading total and scored 12 points on 5-5 shooting. Matthew Price rounded out the Panthers' double-digit scorers with 10 points, shooting 4-7 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc.

  • Mason Jackson had a solid game cleaning off the glass with 11 rebounds.

How It Happened:

  • The first half was a sluggish start for the Panthers as half way through the first half the game was tied at 16. A layup from Brown kickstarted a 13-2 run in which Adelphi got buckets from Price, Zakari McQueen and Rancy.

  • The Mavericks responded quickly, going on an 8-0 run themselves to cut the Adelphi lead down to two. Al-Fatir Connor got the Panther offense going again with a patented driving layup before Price and Brown hit shots to send the Cats into the break up 38-29.

  • In the second half, Adelphi completely shut the home team down. Mercy was able to muster only 26 points in the period, shooting 26.7%.

  • On the other side of the ball, the Panthers shot 60% in the second half and dominated the boards, holding a 44-32 edge in rebounds.

  • Adelphi once again kept its presence inside, outscoring the Mavericks 42-26.

  • The Panther bench stepped up, scoring 34 of the team's 77 points.

Hear from Coach Duke:

  • "I thought our defensive effort was terrific tonight from start to finish. In a game where we struggled shooting the ball, our defense really picked us up tonight. That is what we work on and talk about every single day."

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday, December 16, for a highly anticipated matchup with Dominican (NY). Tip from the Center for Recreation and Sport is set for 7:30 p.m.
