Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Five Panthers Post Double Digits as Men's Basketball Knocks off Dominican, 82-77

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi men's basketball team won its sixth game in a row, avenging its NCAA East Regional defeat by taking down Dominican (NY) 82-77.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (9-1) moves to 5-4 against the Chargers since 2003-04. Their last matchup was the aforementioned NCAA Tournament game in which Dominican won 85-66 in Amherst, N.Y.

Highlights:

  • Mason Jackson paced the team in points and rebounds, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight boards. This was the senior's second 20 points game and the third time he has tallied eight or more rebounds. Jackson shot 8-10 from the floor and 4-6 from three while being a +12 when on the court.

  • Jarnel Rancy scored his most points in an Adelphi uniform with 15 while adding five blocks to his nation-leading total (45 in nine games). In his last two games, Rancy is shooting 12-13.

  • Dayshaun Walton was the team's leading assist man with seven, while adding 17 points on 4-7 shooting from the floor and 7-8 from the charity stripe. The senior also added seven rebounds to his stat line.

  • Al-Fatir Connor and Patrick Burke rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece.

How It Happened:

  • After allowing the first two buckets of the game, the Panthers went on a 13-0 run to take an eight point lead in the opening minutes.

  • The Chargers responded and although Adelphi tried to extend its lead, the road time chipped away and tied the game with eight minutes to play in the first half.

  • The Panthers responded with another run as threes from Walton, Jackson and Reece Brown gave the Brown and Gold their biggest lead of the game at nine. Looking to avoid a sizable deficit while heading into the locker room, Dominican was able to trade threes with Adelphi before a tip-in layup at the buzzer set the halftime score at 44-39 in favor of the Cats.

  • In the second half, the Chargers upped the defensive pressure and forced a handful of Adelphi turnovers, tying the game at 48 in less than four minutes. Dominican took a three points lead just seconds later and held it for a bit, but the Panthers played resilient basketball.

  • Buckets from Burke, Connor and Rancy helped Adelphi regain a lead that grew to six before the Chargers attacked the basket and tied the game with just over eight to play. The teams would go back and forth, with neither side being able to get a lead larger than three.

  • With 2:25 remaining, Dominican led 77-76 after a pair of free throws. Adelphi came down the court and with some good ball movement Matthew Price hit his only, and arguably the biggest, shot of the game with a three ball to give the Panthers a two point lead.

  • Adelphi got a huge stop on the next possession before foul shots from Rancy and Walton iced the game to give the home team an 82-77 lead.

  • Dominican dominated the glass out-rebounding Adelphi 37 (15 offensive rebounds)-28 (three offensive rebounds).

  • Adelphi took 16 less shots than the Chargers but shot 30-51, good for a 58.8% clip while Dominican shot 27-67 (40.3%).

Up Next:

  • The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, December 21, for a non-conference tilt with Goldey-Beacom. Tip from the Center for Recreation and Sport is set for 3:00 p.m.
