Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Outlasts American International, 56-54

Garden City, N.Y. - Gamila Betton scored a layup with three seconds to go in regulation to lift Adelphi University women's basketball over American International College on Wednesday, 56-54 in the team's Northeast 10 Conference opener.

Series History:
  • The game marked the 36th meeting between the Panthers and the Yellow Jackets with the home team holding a 19-17 advantage all-time since 2003.
  • The last meeting between the teams was last season, in the first round of the NE10 playoffs. Adelphi came away with a commanding 52-28 win inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
How It Happened:
  • After an even opening quarter that saw AIC lead by one, the Yellow Jackets used a last second heave in the second to take a four-point advantage heading into the locker room.
  • The visiting team commanded the paint, scoring 32 of its 54 points down low. Both teams managed to capitalize on turnovers, as AIC accounted for 21 points and Adelphi had 17 off the other's miscues.
  • An even third frame saw the home team trailing by four with 10 minutes left in regulation. For the contest, AIC held the lead for over 32 minutes, while the Panthers only saw it for just under four minutes - and when it ultimately mattered.
  • Adelphi took the lead with 1:41 left on a Gianna Chuffo jumper and a late foul sent Betton to the charity stripe where she went 1-for-2, to still give the hosts a two-point edge. Heading to the other side of the floor, Eden Monka tied the game with a layup and 22 minutes still left in regulation.
  • Betton got the lay-in to lead with under five seconds to play and a last ditch attempt at the basket from three for AIC fell short to conclude the contest.
Highlights:
  • Victoria Morales was responsible for a career-high 19 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the field with three three-pointers. She also grabbed three still and pulled down four defensive boards.
  • Gamila Betton scored the gamewinning basket and finished with 10 points while also grabbing three rebounds and dishing out a trio of assists.
  • The Panthers shot 42 percent from three point range for the game.
Up Next:
  • Adelphi will take their first NE10 road trip this weekend to take on Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, Dec. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. inside The Fieldhouse.
