Defense Comes Up Big In Women's Basketball Win Over CSI, 54-37

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team put up an undefeated at home first half of the season with a 54-37 victory over the College of Staten Island on Wednesday in non-conference action.

Series History:
  • The contest marked just the third ever meeting between the two teams, dating back to 2022.
  • Adelphi remains undefeated at home (5-0) and moves to 6-1 overall this season with three more dates on the 2025 docket.
Highlights:
  • Adelphi posted 12 blocks (most as a team since 11 in 2017) and grabbed 13 steals. Lauren Beberman led the way with five takeaways while adding three blocks.
  • Victoria Morales led the Cats on offense with 19 points courtesy of a 5-for-10 performance from three-point range.
  • Me'Challe Cancer had 11 rebounds and went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe while also dishing out a trio of assists.
  • Adelphi's bench was responsible for 16 points and the Panthers capitalized with 19 points on Dolphin turnovers.
How It Happened:
  • Both sides of the floor were quiet for nearly two minutes until Christina Sanchez opened the scoring with a triple to get the home team on the board. The hosts led by at-most 13, but the Dolphins closed out the fram on an 8-1 run that left them trailing by four. The Panthers out-rebounded Staten Island in the opening quarter, including doubling up on offensive rebounds en route to 10 points from second chances.
  • After a narrow opening quarter that only saw the home team up by four, the College of Staten Island went ice cold in the second, scoring just two points, while Adelphi managed to add 10 more. The Dolphins committed 11 turnovers in the second quarter alone - to Adelphi's four - as the Center for Recreation and Sports saw inconsistent offense from both sides.
  • The hosts maintained their double-digit advantage until midway through the third as Staten Island continued to chip away at their deficit. Madison Williams and Morales both knocked down threes to keep the visitors at bay, including a buzzer beater to make it an eight-point margin with one quarter left to play.
  • Adelphi saw its largest lead of the contest when Beberman knocked down two consecutive free throws to make it 54-36 with under two minutes to play.
Up Next:
  • Adelphi will remain on the road through the new year. Their next match up will be at Pace University on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m.. The Cats will have two more non-conference contests against Molloy (Dec. 17) and Post University (Dec. 20).
