Women's Basketball Goes 2-0 During Opening Weekend, Tops Dominican 68-56

Garden City, N.Y. - With scoring from eight different players, the Adelphi University women's basketball team completed an undefeated opening weekend, taking a 68-56 decision from Dominican University on Saturday afternoon.

Series History:
  • Adelphi is 6-2 all-time against Dominican, dating back to March 9, 2007.
  • In their last meeting, the Panthers fell by four, despite a 14 point performance from Isabella Asencio. The Panthers won the previous five contests.
Highlights
  • Lauren Beberman was responsible for a double-double, collecting 11 points and 12 rebounds. Me'Challe Cancer was also in double-figures on the glass, pulling down 11 boards.
  • Isabella Asencio posted a team-leading 18 points for the second consecutive game, dishing out five assists along the way.
  • Madison Williams was the third player in double-digit scoring, accounting for 12 points with two three-pointers.
How It Happened:
  • For the second game in a row, Adelphi capitalized on their opponent's errors, scoring 26 points on turnovers. They also spent majority of the game with the lead (32:44) while the visitors only saw it briefly (3:47).
  • After a narrow opening half, a third quarter in favor of the Chargers (0-2) saw them tie the score at 46-all heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation. Dominican shot 56 percent from the floor with a 6-for-8 clip at the free throw line.
  • Much like Friday night's fourth frame, Asencio got things going for the Panthers and Beberman had a layup at 5:05 that gave the home team a 10-point cushion. Adelphi's largest lead of the contest was with 3:59 left in the fourth when they made it a 13 point spread.
  • The home team struggled from the field, never breaking 45 percent, but their best frame was the fourth quarter when they went 6-for-14.
Up Next:
  • Adelphi will be at Mercy University on Wednesday, Nov. 19 - opening tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
