Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team has pushed its win streak to 10 with a pair of victories on Saturday against Assumption University and St. Thomas Aquinas in straight sets.
The pair of wins were also in straight sets - marking the fourth straight sweep as the Panthers (12-6, 1-0 NE10) have not dropped a set since Sept. 20 and only given up one set since Sept. 20.
For the day,
Macarty McQueen totaled 26 kills, averagin 4.33 per set with an impressive .512 hitting percentage.
Ana Carolina Westerich accounted for 67 assists over the pair of wins, as
Madeleine Chaapel also finished with 20 kills.
Adelphi started the day with its NE10 opener against the Greyhounds, keeping their opponents below the 15-point threshold in two of the three sets. The Panther serving proved strong as they commanded the line with a 12-4 advantage in service aces, while only committing five errors.
Delaney Kiendra topped the team with a trio of aces as
Tessa LaFrenier and
Katie Brokes both chipped in a pair of their own.
After jumping out to an insurmountable lead, Adelphi rolled from a 25-12 win to a 25-11 victory before Assumption kept the third set interesting. The Greyhounds got as close as three (20-17) before a kill from McQueen sent the Panthers on a five-point run to seal the set and the match.
Elena Covic had a pair of kills in the final five points of the contest.
In the afternoon matchup against East Coast Conference competitor St. Thomas Aquinas, Adelphi used tough defense at the net to keep their win streak alive.
The Brown and Gold were responsible for an 8-2 advantage in blocks and hit .333 as a team compared to the Spartans .026 clip. After taking the opener 25-14, the Spartans stayed in the game - producing several consistent runs to remain within reach of the Panthers. Even down the stretch, the Spartans came within one, but Kiendra and Chaapel closed out the set to move to 2-0 in the match.
After a 7-7 stalemate, Adelphi used an 11-5 run to get back in the drivers' seat and win its 10th straight contest.
Adelphi returns to actino on Tuesday, Oct. 7 when they take on Pace University. Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
