Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten in NE10, Tops SCSU 3-1

New Haven, Conn. – The Adelphi University field hockey team remained perfect against Northeast 10 Conference opponents, topping Southern Connecticut State University, by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Leading the way for the Panthers  (7-3, 6-0 NE10) was Lana Mignon De Wet, who continued her stellar season by scoring two goals on the day.

The first quarter saw the Brown and Gold jump out to an early lead, as De Wet scored her first goal in just the fourth minute of play off a penalty corner. Sent in by Jena Geels, the pass was handled by Jody Van Aardt, who set up a forehand strike that De Wet connected on for the first tally of the game. Adelphi controlled possession throughout the quarter, outshooting the Owls 5-2, but was unable to convert on any additional chances.

In the second frame, De Wet extended the lead just one minute in. After taking control of a loose ball near the 25-yard line, she weaved through traffic and beat the SCSU keeper's pad, sending a shot into the top right corner of the net.

Following the two-goal cushion, the Owls' offense increased the pressure, testing starting goalkeeper Allison Gregory several times during the period. Gregory and her defensive unit held strong, with Gregory making three saves, while Marta Alvarez Auguet and Alexis Huntington each recorded a defensive save.

After a change of possession, the Panthers threatened again, as Sydney Rossacci, Katie Dettore, and Geels each put shots on net, though none found the back of the cage. With under four minutes remaining in the half, SCSU capitalized on a penalty corner to cut Adelphi's lead in half. Gregory made a diving save on the initial attempt, but a tip-in on the rebound ended her shutout streak at three games.

Adelphi earned a final penalty corner with three minutes left in the half, but Rossacci's shot missed wide. The teams entered the halftime break with the score at 2-1 in favor of the Panthers.

It didn't take long for the visiting team to once again push out to a two-goal advantage. This time, Katie Detorre got her stick on a De Wet shot attempt from just inside the top of the arc, courtesy of Geels insert. Much of the frame was controlled inside the Adelphi offensive end, as the Owls only managed one shot in the third quarter, while the Cats were awarded three different penalty corner opportunities.

The Panthers tried to add another score in the opening two minutes of the final frame, but Geels' shot was stopped by Owls' keeper Miller. The Owls marched down the field and managed two shots on goal in the ensuing 10 minutes, but Gregory remained locked in to close out the game en route to her sixth win this season.

The Panthers will return to their home field on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a highly-anticipated matchup against Bentley University. Previously unbeaten, the Falcons dropped a 3-1 contest to Assumption on Wednesday, leaving Adelphi as the only team left without a loss in conference play.

The game is set to start at 4:00 p.m .on Motamed Field, following senior day festivities.
