Bridgeport, Conn. — Head coach Gary Book and the No. 23-ranked Adelphi men's soccer team took a quick trip up to Bridgeport on Wednesday afternoon for some non-conference action.
There was not a ton of action in the early goings, as the Purple Knights registered the first shot of the game in the 14th minute. Adelphi held the Bridgeport attack at bay for the opening portion of the half but struggled a bit offensively, not recording a shot until the 30th minute. The Panther threat was real, however, but two quick shots were saved by Bridgeport's keeper.
In the 36th minute, the Purple Knights struck first for a 1–0 lead. Over the next nine minutes, Joseph Blackton had two chances at goal but could not convert on either, as Adelphi went into the break trailing.
Adelphi came out of the locker room pushing the tempo as the Panthers started to get more shots on goal. In the 55th minute, a corner kick was successful for the Cats. Alessio Consoli swung a perfect cross into the box, where it found the head of Agustin Soldo, who put the ball past the keeper to tie the game.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, the tie would not last long, as the Purple Knights came right down the field and scored less than two minutes later.
Adelphi had its chances in the minutes after Bridgeport's second goal but could not connect. The Purple Knights set their defense back and did not let the Panthers create any true chances. Sam Nolan had a few quick runs at goal, and Lucas Nicolaou ripped a shot in the 90th minute that was saved, as Adelphi fell 2–1.
Book's squad will return to the field and to conference play when they host Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
