Garden City, N.Y. - Having lost 12 of their previous 13 matchups, the Adelphi University volleyball team turned the tables on Tuesday evening, sweeping three straight sets from American International College to climb to second place in the league standings with three regular-season contests remaining.
The visiting Yellow Jackets entered Garden City on an eight-match win streak, but the Panthers ended that run in dominant fashion, improving to 18–7 on the year and extending their own winning streak to five.
Offensively, Adelphi was powered by Macarty McQueen and Madeleine Chaapel, who tallied 16 and 10 kills, respectively. McQueen also recorded another double-double, adding 13 digs. At the net, both teams posted seven blocks, but the Panthers' defense held AIC to a hitting percentage below .100. Setter Ana Carolina Westerich dished out 28 of Adelphi's 36 assists, while Autumn Moore contributed six assists and 13 digs of her own.
The Panthers got off to a hot start in the opening set, jumping out to a 9-3 advantage with the help of a
Mackenzie Casey kill. From there, AIC struggled to get any positive momentum, while Adelphi ran up 16 kills to the Yellow Jackets' four.Â
Once more, the second set featured a six-point margin in the early going that saw AIC playing catch up. Adelphi managed to hold onto a two-point edge or better through the remainder of the set to move to 2-0 in the match.Â
The third - and ultimately final - set saw seven tie scores and four lead changes, but balanced scoring from the home team earned them a 25-17 victory. Following a Westerich ace that made it 12-12, the Panthers used a six-point run with Moore at the service line to pull ahead for good.Â
The team is set to take on Queens College on Thursday, Oct. 30 before returning home on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to host Caldwell in non-league action.Â
