Volleyball Overcomes Queens in Non-League Bout

Flushing, N.Y. - After suffering an opening set loss, the Adelphi University volleyball team used a triumphant come from behind effort to win the next three sets against Queens College on Thursday evening, taking the regional matchup for their 19th win of the season.

The opening set loss marked the first set dropped for Adelphi in exactly two weeks, as the Knights took a commanding 25-15 victory. From there, it was the Panthers playing catch up, using extra points in the second en route to three straight to seal the deal.

Macarty McQueen posted a team-leading 20 kills with a .395 hitting percentage as Elena Covic and Delaney Kiendra also reached double-figure kills with 12 and 11, respectively. Pacing the offense was Ana Carolina Westerich, who posted 42 assists and added 10 digs to boot.

Queens players could not miss in the opening frame, as they totaled 15 kills with a single error as the Panthers (19-7) committed six attack errors. In the second, the home team managed to reach a 23-21 advantage, causing Head Coach Danielle MacKnight to call a time out. The Knights saw a glimpse of 2-0 in the match with set points, but Westerich took control and recorded a kill and a service ace to make it 24-all. The ensuing 10 points featured four tie scores but the Panthers ultimately won out, using kills from Kiendra and McQueen to close it out.

Adelphi flipped the script in the third, posting an identical score from the opener, just in their favor. The home team struggled in the fourth to find a stride, hitting below .100, as the Brown and Gold rattled off 14 kills as a program with just two errors to boot. The squad also totaled three blocks in the set with three service aces.

The Panthers are off for the weekend and will return to action on Tuesday, November 4 when they host Caldwell in another non-league matchup. Opening serve is set for 6:00 p.m..
