Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi men's soccer team was back in action on Wednesday night when it hosted Southern Connecticut State at Motamed Field.
The game started out fairly even, with both teams maintaining possession but never really threatening. As time went on, it was the Owls who gained momentum, holding the ball in Adelphi's zone.
A shot from SCSU hit the post in the 25th minute, but that quickly turned into a chance for the Panthers. Receiving the ball at midfield, Sam Nolan swung a cross to the feet of newly entered Matthew Murphy, who sent a quick pass to Rory Duggan. Duggan fired a shot from just inside the box past the Owl keeper and into the back of the net for an early 1-0 Adelphi lead.
Possession continued to change hands after the goal, with the home team having a bit of an edge. That would change in the 39th minute, however, when SCSU's Solomon Aidoo scored a highlight-reel goal from outside the box to tie the game at one. The score would stay tied entering the break.
The second half had a very similar beginning to the first, as once again both squads tried to gain their footing in the early goings. The Owls and Panthers both had chances, but they could not finish, as shots were either off target or saved by the respective goalkeepers.
In the 70th minute, the ball once again found Duggan on the wing as he sprinted past defenders. The senior was able to get the ball into the box, and while he was looking for a teammate, he was fouled and Adelphi was awarded a penalty kick. Up to the spot stepped the Panthers' leading scorer, Ryan Holt. The reigning Northeast 10 Rookie of the Week calmly took two steps and fired the ball into the net for a 2-1 Adelphi lead.
For the next twenty minutes, the Panthers went into defensive mode — and it worked to perfection. SCSU was not able to register a single shot in the remaining time, and Adelphi went on to win the game 2-1.
Head coach Gary Book and his squad will return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they head up to Waltham, Mass., to take on No. 7 Bentley at 2 p.m.
