Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Apicella and Goodrich Star In Women's Soccer's 2-1 Win Over Assumption

Garden City, N.Y. — After a tough road trip against two of the top teams in the country, head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team returned to Motamed Field on Tuesday night looking to get back in the win column against Assumption.

The start was not one to remember for the Panthers as the Greyhounds scored the first goal just 19 seconds into the game.

While some teams may have panicked conceding an early goal, Adelphi did not. The team stuck to its game plan and started to gain its footing, working the ball into Assumption's zone.

In the 15th minute Sarah Kent took the ball at around midfield and sent it over to Dylann Trahey who then swung a crisp pass to Madison Apicella. Apicella took a couple of dribbles, beating the Greyhound defense before firing the tying goal into the back one the net for her sixth of the season.

The Panthers kept on the pressure as the momentum had swung in their favor. They continued to attack Assumption's end of the field but a few clutch Greyhound saves and an Apicella shot that clanked off of the woodwork kept the game tied at one entering the break.

Out of the half, it was Assumption that recorded the first shot of the period but it went wide, allowing the Cats to pick up right where they left off.

In the 54th minute, a beautiful set piece had Apicella fake a shot and pass the ball to the Northeast 10's leading scorer Kayleigh Goodrich. The junior fired a missile across the box and past the goalkeeper to give Adelphi a 2-1 lead.

Just minutes later, the Panthers had a few opportunities to extend their lead but a pair of Trahey attempts were saved before both Bethany Solari and Goodrich hit the crossbar and post.

Assumption did its best to get the ball into Adelphi's zone but every time it seemed like the Greyhounds were going to threaten, the Panthers pushed the ball into the corner and either steal it away or force a corner kick.

The visitor had a great chance in the 87th minute but Elizabeth Schoeneberger's shot sailed wide and the Brown and Gold earned the 2-1 win.

Adelphi outshot the Greyhounds 25 (nine shots on goal) to 10 (six shots on goals) with Emily Aridas making five saves.

DeRosa and the Cats will return to the field when they travel up to Saint Michael's on Saturday for a noon kickoff.
