Garden City, N.Y. - Led by a career-high afternoon for
Elena Covic, the Adelphi University volleyball team returned to the win column in conference play, taking down Saint Anselm College on Saturday, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Covic was responsible for a team-leading 12 kills and added three blocks to her career day as
Macarty McQueen followed suit with 11.Â
After a solid 25-15 set one victory, the Panthers (15-7, 3-1 NE10) continued to lay on the offensive pressure and strong defense, increasing their margin of victory in the second to 14. In both frames, the Hawks (8-7, 1-2 NE10) were held to a negative hitting percentage as the home team connected for five total blocks over the two sets.Â
Adelphi slipped slightly in the third, allowing Saint Anselm to remain as close as two (at 16-14), but kills from Covic and strong serving down the stretch allowed the Cats to seal the deal.Â
As a team, the Panthers hit .453, holding a commanding lead in kills (45-20) and strong edge in blocks (8-2).Â
Next Thursday, Oct. 23, Adelphi will host Chestnut Hill College at 5:00 p.m. As part of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee initiative, this game has been chosen as the team's Roar and Rally contest. The team will also be supporting breast cancer awareness as part of their Dig Pink matchup.Â
