Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University field hockey program (7-5, 6-2) fell to Assumption University, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The first quarter saw the Greyhounds (9-5, 8-1) take an early lead following over nine minutes of scoreless play. With both offenses settling into the game, Assumption struck first, beating starting goalkeeper Allison Gregory on a well-executed breakaway. Each team managed just two shots in the quarter, but the Greyhounds' tally would be the only score through the opening 15 minutes.
In the second period, the Brown and Gold's offense ramped up, drawing three consecutive penalty corners and eventually capitalizing to tie the game. On the third corner attempt, Jena Geels sent a pass to Jody Van Aardt, who quickly found Caroline Beakes. Beakes then connected with Lana Mignon De Wet in front of the net. De Wet controlled the entry and slipped a quick backhander through the legs of an Assumption defender and past the goalie to even the score at 1-1.
Following the equalizer, Assumption responded by applying pressure on Adelphi's back line. Defensive saves by Olivia Docyk and Alexis Huntington helped momentarily to preserve the tie, but the visitors reclaimed the lead with under two minutes remaining in the half.
Coming out of the intermission, both teams generated quality scoring chances. Geels had a strong opportunity for the Panthers but was denied by the Assumption goalkeeper. Shortly after, the Greyhounds extended their lead to two, finishing another breakaway by drawing Gregory out of position and capitalizing on a deflected pass off a Panther defender that found the back of the net.
In the final frame, the Brown and Gold made several offensive pushes, with Kelly Johnson and Beakes each putting shots on goal. However, Adelphi was unable to cut into the deficit. With under two minutes to play, Assumption added an insurance goal to put the game out of reach.
Head coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 21, when they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas College for a 3 p.m. matchup.
