Box Score Sparkill, N.Y. – The Adelphi University field hockey team earned a dominant 4-0 road win over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon, led by a two-goal performance from senior Sydney Rossacci.
The Panthers (8-5, 7-2 NE10) struck early, with Rossacci opening the scoring off a fast break initiated by Jody Van Aardt. Van Aardt fed Rossacci a cross in front of the net, which the senior buried with a backhand shot past the Spartans' goalkeeper.
Adelphi continued to apply pressure throughout the first quarter, drawing five penalty corners and firing five additional shots, though they couldn't add to their lead.
Less than two minutes into the second frame, Kelly Johnson doubled the Panthers' lead. Following a penalty corner, Johnson connected with Lana Mignon De Wet, who returned the pass for a one-timer goal.
With time expiring in the half, the road team extended its lead to three. Rossacci capitalized on another penalty corner with one second left on the clock, notching her second goal of the game off a setup from Caroline Beakes.
In the second half, the Panthers remained in control. Johnson and De Wet tested the Spartans' defense with shots on goal, while goalkeeper Allison Gregory preserved the shutout with two key saves in the third quarter.
Justina Cavallaro took over in net for the final period and made two quick saves to keep the clean sheet intact. With 6:30 remaining, freshman Izzy Leclair sealed the win with a goal set up once again by Beakes.
Goalkeepers Gregory and Cavallaro combined for the shutout, as the Adelphi defense kept the Spartans off the board for all four quarters.
Head coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, traveling to Springfield, Mass., to face American International College in a 4 p.m. matchup.
