Colchester, Vt. - Despite 26 combined points from
Rolanda Robinson and
Kaitlyn O'Connell, the Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped its road contest to Saint Michael's Sunday afternoon, by a final score of 47-43.
O'Connell hit a jumper with 5:38 to play, tying the game at 38-all. Range from beyond the arc followed from the senior, trimming the deficit to one as three and a half minutes ticked remained. Two field goals from the Purple Knights increased their margin to five with two minutes left on the clock. O'Connell grabbed her seventh point in five minutes, going back to four with 19 seconds to go. A pair of missed free throws from the Purple and Gold gave some life, but the Panthers would do the same with five seconds left, effectively ending the game.Â
Adelphi got off to a good start, scoring the clash's first six points, with four coming from sophomore guard
Isabella Asencio.
Lauren Beberman's layup increased the first quarter lead to three, and the Brown and Gold finished the frame with their highest shooting clip of the day at 38%.Â
A 10-0 run from the Purple Knights defined the second quarter, going from down two to up eight capped off by a Bella Franchi jump shot. Robinson scored the Panthers' final six points of the half, with two layups and the same amount of free throws to cut the deficit to four at the break.Â
Saint Michael's came out faster at the start of the third, taking a nine point lead at one point. Defense would persist after that though, with a three-pointer from both Robinson and O'Connell got the deficit down to just one point as the buzzer sounded.Â
Four Panthers finished with two steals, with Robinson joining the list with
Gamila Betton,
Christina Sanchez, and
Lateisha Willis. Willis tallied six boards which would be one less than O'Connell's team high of seven.Â
Head Coach
