Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Drops Hard Fought Game to Assumption, 53-45

Worcester, Mass. — Head coach Sade Jackson and the Adelphi University women's basketball team headed up to Assumption on Saturday afternoon for a Northeast-10 tilt.

The game started off strong defensively as neither team was able to get to double digits halfway through the first quarter. Tied at seven with just over three minutes to play, the Greyhounds made a pair of shots to go up four as the buzzer sounded.

Assumption's lead grew to seven at the beginning of the second quarter but then the 'Cats began to play very good basketball. Their defense was stout as the Greyhounds were only able to make one shot for the next three and a half minutes. A pair of Gamila Betton free throws followed by a Lauren Beberman hook shot and a jumper from Isabella Asencio sent the 'Cats on a 9-2 run to tie the ballgame at 16. However, free throws from Assumption with 30 second left would give the home team a two point lead heading into the break.

The beginning of the second half saw both teams trading buckets until Adelphi caught fire. Kaitlyn O'Connell drilled a three pointer which sparked a jumper from Rolanda Robinson and two big makes from Asencio. Adelphi took its biggest lead of the game at four but the Greyhounds were able to cut it to one before the quarter ended.

The game continued to be tightly contested and Adelphi regained its four point lead on a Beberman jump shot. An O'Connell three put the Panthers up six but Assumption responded with a triple of it's own.

The three-pointer sparked the Greyhound offense as Assumption finished the game on a 16-2 run and won the game, 53-45.

Asencio scored a team-high 18 points, followed by O'Connell with 16.

Robinson grabbed a team-high seven boards.

The 'Cats will return to the court on Tuesday when they host nationally ranked Bentley at 5:30 p.m.
